ITS TIME TO DOWNSIZE

Downsizing is one of the most underrated, yet essential parts of your new piercings healing process

WHAT IS IT?

Downsizing can refer to changing the length of the jewellery, the gauge/thickness or the diameter of a ring. Usually, it means shortening the length of a barbell once the swelling goes down.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The initial jewellery used is long enough to accommodate for swelling. Once the area settles, the extra length on the bar can cause damage if not properly fitted. If your jewellery is too long it can get snagged or knocked, which can cause migration or irritation bumps.

WHEN DO I DOWNSIZE?

There is no exact time frame as to when you should downsize your jewellery because the initial swelling phase could last between 2 weeks and a couple of months. I recommend downsizing when the crustiness phase has subsided, and you start to notice the bar length is visibly sticking out and you are getting it caught. Normally, we downsize ear piercings within 8-12 weeks and oral piercings within 2 weeks.

DO ALL PIERCINGS NEED TO BE DOWNSIZED?

Not all ear piercings need to be downsized but it is always a good idea to come into the studio to check that it is healing well. Oral piercings always need to be downsized to avoid damage to your teeth and gums.
